Observation and purposeful action are the Blue Heron, but for Artist Ty Meier, complimentary colors blue and orange are as important as the bird and preying mantis. Blue is serene, quiet and still, like the heron and the sky, while orange is warmth, change, fire, and in this case, a harbinger of winter.

Artists frequently walk a solitary path before suddenly surfacing with their creations, and Herons are also seen alone and quietly self-sufficient before they strike.

In the lower right hand corner is a tiny green preying mantis which also means patience, meditation and sudden action.

This painting sold from the New Hampshire Artist Association gallery in Portsmouth, New Hampshire several years ago but has remained a cornerstone of Ty Meier’s portfolio, culminating in the 2025 Great blue Heron music festival in upstate New York where Dionysian festival-goers chirped “Happy Heron” to each other and bought this artwork as stickers, greeting cards and prints hand over fist.

Ty mounted this print to a hand painted wood-panel then calligraphed glossy pigmentless acrylic medium onto it to give it it’s depth and texture, and then lacquered it until it glittered.
